CPR Institute Mediation Committee Meeting
Zoom
Event Details
CPR Members are invited to attend the CPR Institute Mediation Committee Meeting on November 20th, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST.
This meeting will be held on Zoom. This event is for CPR members only.
The meeting will include a conversation with Zaza Johnson Elsheikh.
Come for a wide-ranging discussion that will include:
- Mediating highly emotive conflicts and those where cultural and religious nuances are relevant
- Supporting neurodivergent parties in mediation
- Conflict resolution in Muslim and Arabic speaking communities
- Mediating Jewish-Muslim tensions
- Islamophobia and Walking Toward Prejudice
Mediators often speak about the importance of cultural dynamics and responding to high emotions in their cases, but how many practitioners actually gravitate to disputes where cultural practices or beliefs are at the core of the conflict. Our next speaker Zaza Johnson Elsheikh, a London-based neutral who has pioneered a “culturally-oriented practice” in which she actively welcomes the cultural elephant into the room. A member of the International Academy of Mediators, Zaza’s practice encompasses commercial, tort, family and workplace disputes as well as shareholder disputes in family businesses and inheritances. Zaza’s mediation work draws upon her experience as a Medical Doctor (1994 – 2002) and a Clinical Negligence Solicitor (2002 – 2006) and her practice includes both medical negligence and end of life disputes.
Recognized as a Muslim Faith Leader, Zaza teaches the interpretation and application of the Quran on a weekly basis. Born in London, raised in Sudan, and returning to the United Kingdom for her University education, Zaza’s mixed cultural (Jamaica and Sudan) and religious (Baptist and Muslim) parental background has informed her dialogue-building skills in many multi-party disputes - such as with the British Government in the Windrush Scandal (2018-22) and between Counter-Terrorism Policing and the Survivors of Terrorism (2017-2018).
